In the baby’s sleep area, 3,400 babies die suddenly each year in the United States, according to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention statistics. Medical experts have a specific term to describe these deaths: sudden unexpected infant death. They identify many causes that could lead to these newborn deaths, but around 32% remain categorized under the label of unknown cause.
On a state level, government agencies, hospitals and nonprofits have launched programs and campaigns to ensure that babies’ safety remains a priority.
Safe Baby, a Healthy Start Coalition of Hillsborough County program funded by the Children’s Board of Hillsborough County, is one of them. Healthy Start of Hillsborough launched the program to reduce the county’s infant mortality rate and improve the health of pregnant women.
