Today, City of North Port official says the Myakkahatchee Creek Greenway trail will officially open on Nov 15, 2023.
The trail is one mile long and located adjacent to Myakkahatchee Creek, providing a linear park experience to residents.
In addition, it will serve as a safe pedestrian connection between West Price Boulevard and Appomattox Boulevard.
The City Commission gave its approval on June 28, 2022.
They agreed with Gale Construction of Illinois to execute the project, which cost the City $1.9 million. This project is funded by park impact fees, surtax, and a developer contribution of $141,646, explained officials in a recent new release.
This infrastructure is the first phase of the Myakkahatchee Creek Greenway Master Plan.
City officials explain that the accessible trail is engineered to avoid wetland impacts wherever possible.
They expect this infrastructure will minimize overlap with the existing primitive bike trail while helping mitigate the impact of existing vegetation and native trees.
The Myakkahatchee Creek Environmental Park is a heavily wooded area that covers the hammock, South Florida pine flatwoods, marshes, and wetlands.
Before 1989, the year of its acquisition, the 168 acres of the land served as pastureland for cattle grazing.
