TALLAHASSEE, Fl.- Today, Florida Highway Patrol reports that 7,499 crashes happened from November 23 -27 last year. The statistics also show that 207 people were injured and 68 others died within 30 days following the crash, according to a news release.

Officials underline whether holiday travel increases vehicles on the roadways; on the other hand, it increases the possibility of car accidents. However, these travel stats released days before Thanksgiving are to warn and encourage travelers to use caution on Florida roadways.

They explain that people under the influence of drugs, alcohol, or both cause 28% of all fatal crashes during Thanksgiving week in 2022.

“FHP reminds drivers that impaired driving is dangerous driving; it kills.” Therefore, driving under the influence of medication, marijuana, and other illegal narcotics is also categorized as impaired driving.

In addition, they say, “If you are impaired, your reaction time is affected, as are your concentration and hand-eye coordination.”

FHP encourages Florida drivers and visitors to use a ride-share service because driving while drowsy is similar to driving while impaired. “The same delayed reaction time, lack of concentration, and hand-eye coordination resulting in the same dangers,” they said.

The Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles provides on their website a few tips to help ensure safe traveling during the holiday season.
